No one HAS power. What a painful-but-unavoidable truth. . .
- We don’t just HAVE power, for instance with clients and colleagues.
- Because ‘power’ functions as a kind of ‘currency’ that happens in relationship.
- It’s a kind of ‘exchange’ of energy.
- People give it to us.
- Or they don’t. . .
- When they do, they allow us to influence them because they see in us (‘project’ onto us) some kind of ‘good reason’
What are some good reasons for clients to allow us to influence them ('give us power’)? Over the years, as an OD Consultant, Gestalt Therapist and Executive Coach, I have discovered seven sources of power that I believe are important to understand. What they are, where they come from, and what are the benefits and dangers associated with them.
Learning Outcomes:
- The ability to NAME the seven major Sources of Power for Consultants.
- Understanding the upsides and downsides of each.
- How to choose when to use which one to maximize creative impact and minimize negative consequences.

About Your Presenter
John Scherer - Moving from Seattle in 2008 to a base in Warsaw, John has become known as ’the guy who introduced OD to Poland’. In 2018, he delivered a module (on ’Action Research’) to the first PhD Program in Shenyang, China, and since 1987, men and women executives and community leaders from 54 countries have graduated from his Executive/Leadership Development Intensives, making the impact of his work truly international.
He was author of Work and the Human Spirit, which, at the time of its first printing in 1993, christened the name for this growing trend in management studies and leadership development. John draws on a diverse background as a former U.S. Naval officer, Lutheran Minister, Gestalt Therapist and Applied Behavioral Scientist to pursue his mission of transforming the world at work.
In 1974 he joined Bob Crosby (Founder) and Ron Short as one of the original three co-creators of the LIOS Graduate Program.
